What rope access is, and when it beats a scaffold

Rope access is industrial abseiling. A two-person team rigs from the roof, descends the elevation on twin ropes and does the work in place: repointing, sealing, glazing, netting, inspection, cleaning. No scaffold, no mast climber, no cherry picker parked on the pavement. The building stays open and the street stays clear.

In London that matters more than anywhere else. A scaffold needs a licence from the borough, weeks of erection, a hoarding on the footway and a hire meter that runs whether or not anyone is working. A rope team is on the wall the same week, and for jobs under two weeks the price is often a third of the scaffold-based figure.

Where rope access wins

• ✓Buildings that have to stay open: hospitals, schools, offices, occupied blocks
• ✓Short and medium jobs where a scaffold would cost more than the repair itself
• ✓Listed and conservation-area buildings where nothing can be bolted to the fabric

Where it does not

Long, high-volume wet trades across a whole facade, and work that needs heavy materials handled at height.
