Gutter & Hopper Repairs London

Blocked or defective gutters and hoppers cause overflow that saturates walls and causes damp. We clear, repair and maintain rainwater systems at height.

Why Gutters and Hoppers Matter

Gutters and hoppers are designed to collect rainwater from the roof and direct it safely into downpipes and drains. When they block, overflow or develop leaks, water discharges directly onto the building facade below, saturating the masonry over time.

A single blocked hopper can discharge thousands of litres of water down a wall during winter months. The visible damp that appears internally means the problem is already well established externally. Internal decorating alone cannot resolve this because the water source remains active.

Saturated walls take considerable time to dry even after the gutter is cleared or repaired. The longer overflow continues, the deeper the saturation and the greater the risk of secondary damage including timber decay, plaster breakdown and mould growth.

Regular gutter maintenance is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect a building. Preventive clearing and minor repairs are consistently cheaper than dealing with the consequences of prolonged water discharge onto masonry. Rope access avoids unnecessary scaffolding where suitable for these routine tasks.

Common Gutter and Hopper Problems

Blocked Gutters

Leaf debris, moss and silt accumulate over time, reducing capacity and causing overflow during rain.

Blocked Hoppers

Hoppers collect debris at the junction point and overflow directly onto the wall below when blocked.

Failed Joints

Gaps between gutter sections or at outlet connections allow water to leak onto the fascia and wall behind.

Incorrect Falls

Gutters that have sagged or lost their fall hold standing water and overflow at the wrong locations.

Corroded Cast Iron

Older cast iron gutters develop pinhole leaks and rust-through, dripping water onto walls continuously.

Displaced Downpipes

Disconnected or cracked downpipes discharge water directly onto the building wall instead of into drains.

How We Handle Gutter and Hopper Work

1

Access

We reach high-level gutters using rope access where suitable, avoiding scaffolding costs and disruption. Cherry pickers or ladders are used where more appropriate.

2

Clear

All debris is removed from gutters, hoppers and outlet connections. Downpipes are checked for blockages and rodded through where necessary.

3

Repair

Failed joints are re-sealed, brackets re-fixed, sections re-aligned or replaced. We carry common fittings for same-visit resolution where possible.

4

Report

You receive photographs and a clear report of work completed, current condition, and any related repairs we noticed during the mobilisation.

Frequently Asked Questions

At minimum once per year, ideally in late autumn after leaf fall. Buildings near trees may need clearing twice annually. Regular clearing prevents the build-up that causes blockages and overflow.
Yes. A blocked gutter or hopper that overflows sends large volumes of water down the wall face. Over weeks and months this saturates the masonry and causes internal damp. It is one of the most common and most preventable causes of water ingress in London buildings.
Yes. We repair and re-seal cast iron gutters, including re-packing joints and applying protective coatings. Where sections are beyond repair, we can replace like-for-like or advise on alternatives that maintain the building's appearance.
Yes. Related repairs such as pointing defects, flashing issues or minor roof faults can often be completed during the same mobilisation where possible, saving on additional access costs and reducing disruption.
